Even though our focus at www.fiftysense.com is on Outdoor Activities, I feel compelled to bring this outstanding product to your attention. Even though it is decidedly an Indoor Activity, this digital microscope is a great way to explore the smaller wonders of our world – either by yourself or with kids, grandkids or just anyone.
First the basics: It’s a handheld digital microscope powered by the 2.0 USB cable to your computer or similar device. It has built-in LED illumination, 10x to 40x and 150x magnification. There’s an easy- to- use 2MP camera for snapshot images or video, and a simple measurement function in the software. Computer requirement are pretty standard these days – UVC Plug and Play with Windows 7, Vista, XP and most Mac 10.4.9 and later. The device comes standard with adjustable stand for steadier, closer images. The USB cord is 6’ which gives a wide range of use.
So, what can you use this for? Are you or your kids into CSI, NCIS or any of the forensic procedural shows on TV? This is great fun for examining fingerprints, checking money for counterfeit versions, looking closely at any number of things – coins, salt crystals, rock cross sections, leaves, insects, wood grains, and on and on. Since it’s a small handheld device, the possibilities are almost limitless. How fun it is to see your grandchild’s eyes light up when they discover the smallest details and mysteries of their world!

Another good feature is that the CD loaded quickly and with no problems. The directions are easy to understand and the adjustments for magnification and focus are not difficult. It does take some practice to quickly find the correct position to match the magnification with distance from object to get the clearest image. After a few times, though, it should come naturally.
