We have met Helen and she seems like everyone's grandmother until you start doing research to see what she and her husband have accomplished. This book is just one of her adventures!
Helen and Bill Thayer, accompanied by their part-wolf, mostly Husky dog, Charlie, set out to live among wild wolf packs, first in the Canadian Yukon and then in the Arctic. They have the amazing ability and patience to establish trust over time because the wolves accept Charlie as the alpha male of the newly arrived pack. Readers travel with the Thayers as they learn about wolf family structure, view the intricacies of the hunt, the wolves' finely honed survival skills, and playfulness.
We were astounded at how the wolves accepted them in the Yukon, but when they went to the Arctic during the winter, we really understood how exceptional this couple is. Yet, at the same time, Helen always writes as if any normal person could do her adventures. It allows us to realize that no dream is too big!
